How does the Mobile Deal Finder work?

The Deal Finder is a simple yet powerful tool to help you find the best mobile deals in Australia that fit your unique needs. You describe what you want from your mobile service, and it instantly searches through hundreds of phones and plans to work out the best options for you.

Based on your usage it works out what your monthly bill would be for every suitable plan in our database. That way you can make a decision based on what suits you, rather than what suits the phone company

So you've found the deal you like. What next?

For most carriers, you can just buy online by clicking through to their website from the results page.
Or if you prefer a more personal approach, you can call them or go into a store. Knowing exactly what you want will make getting a plan a smooth and even pleasant experience.

Some things to know

The Mobile Deal Finder uses average values to work out the numbers.

• All calls are calculated on a per minute basis for an apples-to-apples comparison between plans. This means that it doesn’t matter if a service provider’s call rates are per second, per 30 seconds or per minute. You get a balanced view irrespective. However, if you frequently make calls that last less than 1 min, you will get more value on a plan that has per second billing. This difference keeps reducing as your calls get longer.

• Some plans come with included minutes in addition to included value. Here we convert these minutes to their equivalent dollar value to make it easy to compare different plans.

• Voice calls are assumed to be 3 mins on average.

• Voicemail calls are assumed to be 1 min on average

What is the difference between results from major carriers and all service providers?

Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Three are classified as major carriers for the simple reason that they cover 95% of the Australian market amongst them. Having said that, sometimes smaller re-sellers can have plans that would suit you better, so be sure to check everything before making a decision.

How do you pick your charities?

Wikipedia, Baranardos and The Australian Red Cross do great work and deserve all the support we can provide. Not saying that there aren’t other deserving ones, but these are just the ones we like best.

I found a bug. How do I report it?

You can send us bug details through the Contact Us link at the bottom of every page. Please try and be as specific as possible about what input you provided and why you think the results may not be correct. Thanks for letting us know! Every report helps us get even better.

What kind of plans feature in the results?

Contract plans with and without phones. Contracts can range from 1 month to 24 months in duration.

Plans from all major and not so major service providers are included. At the last count there were over 300 plans, and 100 phones in our database

Why can’t I find the plan I’m on in the results?

Only plans that are currently available to new connections come up in the results. If you don’t see the plan you are currently on, it is likely that the service provider has taken it off the market for new connections

Can I look for prepaid plans?

We don’t calculate for prepaid plans just yet, but keep checking. It is coming soon.

How do I find phones that are on a monthly payment plan?

Most of the major service providers let you buy phones and other hardware on no-interest plans. This format is variously called a monthly payment plan, hardware payment plan, easy payment plan or monthly repayment option. You can spread the cost of the phone over the term of your contract by paying a fixed amount each month on top of the plan charges.

We don’t include these phones in our results since handset costs vary from store to store. If you do decide to take this option, be sure to shop around and negotiate the cost of the hardware before signing any contracts.

Can I be sure that PhonesandPlans is completely unbiased?

This website is 100% independent and absolutely does not favour any carrier over another. All recommendations are based entirely on the input you provide.

How accurate are the recommendations?

In most cases, the recommendations are very accurate since the Mobile Deal Finder actually tests every single plan in our database for your usage. The results will obviously depend on how well your actual usage matches with the information you provide.

If your calling pattern varies a lot from month to month, provide data from the higher activity months - that way you give yourself a buffer for unexpectedly busy times.
